An ambitious bid has been launched to have the qualifying heats for Olympic skateboarding to be held in Cornwall.

Mount Hawke Skate Park is gathering support for its plans to make its purpose-built skate centre the venue for GB qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.The qualifiers would take place in April 2018 and would tie in with the skate park’s 30th anniversary. The competition is expected to be broadcast live on BBC TV.

Ciaran Ryder, from Mount Hawke, said: “The first skateboard in the UK was sold in Cornwall – it really did start here so it would make sense for us to host the qualifying for the Olympics.”

Skateboarding grew out of surfing and was introduced in Cornwall by surfers who had brought their boards with them when visiting the county.

While traditionally viewed as a street hobby skateboarding has grown in stature as a sport which has led to its inclusion in the Tokyo Olympics.
