Where can I find more information about the candidates? I’m asked to vote but have never heard of any of them. There seems to be a dire lack of canvassing in this area!
Hi Daniel,
Some of the information is starting to come through now. We will try to encourage the candidates to share something with you all in order for voters to make a decision!
Thank you.
My name is Chris Watson I am in my 30’s and I have lived in Trevellas all of my life. I am independent and am not standing for any political party. Many of you will know I run a business called Creative View Limited, which was established in 2010. We specialise in design, manufacture and installation of all kinds of signs, stickers, banners, etc and deal with a huge plethora of customers/ businesses in the local area. Being self-employed and managing staff has given me a huge range of transferable skills which I think will be invaluable as a parish councillor.
I have 3 children at Mithian School, where I am also a Parent governor. As a former pupil myself I have a real soft spot for the school and a proactive interest in its improvement and success. My children are also the 6th generation of our family to attend the school. I am also the only qualified assessor working with Cornwall College and their students to assess apprentices in my sector.
I have a keen interest in the area and when the application came up I thought it was the perfect opportunity for young people to have an input into the future of St. Agnes and surrounding areas. I hope that if elected I am able to voice the opinions of the local community and create some positive development to the immediate area.
Congratulations Chris. I’m sure you’ll be a great asset to the Parish Council Well done to Jeremy as well for standing and for both of you turning up for the count when others didn’t.
Hi, I’m Colin Bradbury and I’m standing for the St Agnes ward in the forthcoming Parish Council elections. I am standing as an independent candidate as I feel that working effectively or the community is more important than any political affiliation.
I have lived in St Agnes for 21 years and currently work as a freelance writer and photographer. I have a background in finance – which I believe would be useful in a councillor role – and I also ran my own businesses (in Truro and Taunton) for several years. Having set up and run a small business, with all the challenges of hiring staff and dealing with small business logistics, I feel that I would be an effective voice for local enterprises in our village. I am also involved with a local sports team and have a particular interest in the role of sport in our community.
I feel that St Agnes is facing a range of challenges at the moment, from development (over-development some people might feel) to local services and the local environment, and that there is a need for people living here to have a strong voice in the future of our community, When I saw that there were vacancies on the parish council, I felt that it was time for me to step up and try to play a positive role in the future of our village, and that is why I have put myself forward in this election.
Thanks to Chris Watson and Colin Bradbury for the their postings – amazed that no-one else has created some information as its impossible to vote for someone unless I have some information. In my case right now there is only only candidate I can vote for on my form – I will not play lucky Dip on my other choices.
Surely there should be a place to look at the candidate information before the voting forms come out? It should of course be available online rather than generate ‘junk’ in our letter box – not that I have received any on these elections.
FROM DAWN BROWN – ST AGNES CANDIDATE
My name is Dawn Brown I have worked at The Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust for the last six years, having previously worked for many years for a company in the parish at Wheal Kitty as well as living in St Agnes. Although I work full time the flexible working arrangements that I have agreed will allow me to commit the time that I know is needed to be a good Parish Councillor.
Having served as a Councillor in the last Parish Council, I believe I can hit the ground running. I am proud of achievements of the Council that I was part of, in securing the car park, public toilets and library for local people as well as working with Pete Mitchell and Cornwall Councill on projects to reduce speeding through our communities and congestion caused by parking, amongst other things.
I was part of the Neighbourhood Development Plan Steering Committee from its inception until the adoption of the Plan as a legal planning document. As part of the previous Planning Committee helped ensure awareness by developers and that any plans then submitted followed the policies in the plan that our people had voted for.
I am aware of the financial struggles many parishioners are now facing with rising prices and wage constraints and believe that parish money should be spent wisely, and expenditure should show a real benefit to our parish infrastructure and local people.
I am a member of a number of local voluntary groups and over the years have helped organise various events and fundraisers in St Agnes village. I also support as many events as I can held by other groups in the parish which help to contribute to the vitality of our community and raise money for good causes.
I believe as an elected representative it is important to listen to what people actually want and then get together to work out a way to deliver it.
I am pleased to be part of an election that shows there is interest in taking on the role of a St Agnes Parish Councillor and hope that all those elected will commit the time and effort that I know will be needed.
FROM JEREMY FIELDEN – MITHIAN CANDIDATE
Hello, I’m Jeremy Fielden and I’m standing as an independent candidate for the Mithian ward in the forthcoming Parish Council elections.
I live in Mithian and work in St Agnes and across Cornwall with both locals and visitors to the area. I have a background in scientific research before moving into land management and conservation.
I work with schools, local volunteer groups, Cornwall Wildlife Trust, farmers and landowners across Cornwall to improve land use for increased water quality and biodiversity.
I’m a keen walker and cyclist, interested in nature, history and archaeology. I enjoy sailing, exploring the underwater environment and volunteering with the St Agnes Marine conservation group.
If elected I look forward to working with the community to voice their ideas and concerns, and to help create the community we want.
Hello, I’m Dr Mark Nason and I’m standing as an independent candidate for the St Agnes ward. I have lived in the village for seven years, with my wife Joceline and our four children aged 3 – 18. I am passionate about inclusivity and equality of opportunity, education and environmental justice, craft beer and brass music. Since gaining my degree in ecology and PhD in soil science, I have worked for 20 years in education and research. I am a Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner, and a Council Member of the British Society of Soil Science, and in this capacity I am preparing to attend the UN Climate Change Conference, COP26. I am equally engaged with local environmental issues and have recently presented a proposal to establish a community food forest in the village.
My day job is Head of Eden Project Learning (a partnership between Cornwall College and Eden), where I lead the resurrection of University level courses in horticulture, plant and soil science. I am a fierce advocate for equality of access to education, with Cornwall having one of the lowest rates of participation in Higher Education in the UK. With this in mind I have introduced the country’s first ecology apprenticeship to provide a work-based route into the ecology sector without student debt. I also sit on a committee of the Quality Assurance Agency, which champions and regulates Access to Higher Education for 60,000 adults wishing to change career every year, with a particular focus on nursing and allied health professions. This has given me experience of upholding the principles of public office, which will stand me in good stead as a parish councillor.
As a qualified teacher I am as comfortable teaching primary school children as PhD students and have organised hands-on activities in the parish, including a six-week programme at Mt Hawke Academy, designed to raise awareness of careers in science. My youngest son attends St Agnes Academy and my smallest will hopefully do so from next September, continuing a long relationship with our village school.
Last year we were evicted from our rented home in the village, which has since been turned into a holiday cottage. The advice and practical support given by the parish council during that very difficult time provides part of my motivation to join. We were incredibly lucky to be able to stay in the village, but only just, and now that we are settled I would like to give something back and am very keen to help people experiencing similar issues.
My eldest daughter and I have played cornet in St Agnes Silver Band for nearly seven years now and this is a really important part of my identity. The band is a big part of the events that mark the year in our village and I love being part of that.
It is so useful to be able to hear from the candidates- thanks all for posting! This is exactly what I need to make an informed decision as to who to vote for. Without it, I wouldn’t have voted.
Thanks Again
jamie
Ever since I received notification of the election, I have been expecting to have some information about the candidates and their priorities, posted through my door. This never happened. Nothing through the door, nothing in the Bolster…the information in the above comments is all I had to go on today when I went to vote, and it only covered half of the candidates on the list I was given to choose from. I cannot understand how this has happened. What is the point of having an election if you know nothing about the candidates? One sheet of A4 with a paragraph about each, would have been a start. I would have gladly hand delivered them, I’m sure many others would also. It’s really not good enough is it?
